El primer manuscrito de esta novela se perdió en Correos cuando el escritor y médico escocés se lo envió a su editor, pero estas 150 páginas reescritas de memoria por el propio autor han pervivido estos 130 años. Conan Doyle escribió la novela cuando tenía 23 años, entre 1883 y 1884, unos años antes de la publicación del primer libro de la saga de Sherlock Holmes. La novela cuenta la historia de un cultivado hombre de 50 años que vive confinado en su habitación por culpa de la gota, y que desgrana su visión de la vida, la religión, la guerra o la literatura. Este libro fue salvado del olvido por la Biblioteca Británica en 2011, después de comprar el manuscrito en una subasta.

Retrato picaresco de uno de los grandes intelectuales de las cortes de Cádiz
Las Aventuras literarias que, bajo el pseudónimo de Lupián Zapata, publicara Adolfo de Castro en 1851 forma parte de una de las falsificaciones más injustas de la historia literaria española, pues nos dibuja una imagen ridícula y caricaturesca de Bartolomé José Gallardo que ha pervivido hasta la actualidad. Se esconde tras esta biografía, a caballo entre el retrato picaresco y la difamación cómica, todo un proceso de descalificación política que relega a Gallardo a los territorios de la excentricidad, la extravagancia y la locura, negándose así la rigurosidad de uno de los intelectuales más íntegros que generara las Cortes de Cádiz. Junto con las Aventuras también se editan los primeros textos de Castro contra Gallardo: las Cartas desde el otro mundo y el Proceso.
Alberto Romero Ferrer (Cádiz, 1964) -editor literario de esta edición- es profesor Titular de Literatura Española en la Universidad de Cádiz y director del Grupo de Estudios del Siglo XVIII de esa Universidad. Pertenece a la Sociedad Española de Estudios del Siglo XVIII, la Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies y a la Sociedad de Literatura Española del Siglo XIX. Esta obra es un proyecto multidisciplinar con un enfoque práctico que estudia la resolución de los problemas más prevalentes en los ámbitos de los procedimientos y monitorización, la actuación en las emergencias prehospitalarias y la atención en las diversas patologías en la UCI.Los autores, profesionales acreditados en los respectivos campos del conocimiento, han elaborado de manera clara y sencilla el libro con el propósito de que sirva de punto de referencia y guía en el camino docente que los alumnos deben seguir en la adquisición de las distintas competencias.Se trata de un novedoso libro de consulta respecto a otras obras de la especialidad, pues se lleva a cabo el abordaje más completo de monitorización en forma de problemas clínicos. Incluye también temas de emergencias, gestión, investigación y bioética y en un enfoque práctico de las patologías de UCI.La obra se divide en cuatro secciones. La sección A recoge fundamentalmente los procedimientos diagnósticos y/o terapéuticos característicos del enfermo crítico y de las emergencias. En la sección B se valora la importancia de las emergencias a nivel de la medicina prehospitalaria, incluyendo los temas relacionados con las catástrofes, los ambientes poco habituales y la asistencia de las emergencias en los Servicios de Urgencia. La sección C se centra en las patologías que generan disfunción orgánica o estados críticos. La última sección estudia los aspectos que condicionan la asistencia del enfermo crítico y de las emergencias: bioética, gestión del riesgo, calidad, sistemas pronósticos, economía de la salud y gestión.Todos los capítulos clínicos se inician con un caso ilustrativo vivido por los autores que sirve como elemento para aproximar al lector a la realidad de la patología relacionada con el enfermo crítico y las emergencias. Cada capítulo ofrece puntos clave y tablas sobre las pruebas diagnósticas y el tratamiento. La bibliografía se presenta en forma de lecturas recomendadas.Al abordar preferentemente los temas asistenciales, la obra se dirige a los médicos en formación, tanto de medicina intensiva como de las diferentes especialidades médicas, que trabajan en urgencias y emergencias.
